Chapter 15

John went directly to the drug store after leaving Maggie Ann’s, fortunately it opened early for the highway traffic, it had a little food for people to eat on the road, and a couple of gas pumps. He was there for one purpose, but he picked up a few other items, so it wasn’t so obvious. The sleepy kid managing the register, didn’t even notice what he was scanning and putting in the bag, and for that John was grateful.

He took his stash and headed home to shower and put on his uniform. There was an anticipation running through his veins for later. Whether tonight or another day, he couldn’t help but believe, sometime soon he and Maggie Ann would be naked, together. That thought was enough to put a smile on his face and a lightness in his step.

His happy mood lasted until he was on his way to the department, when he remembered all the paperwork that he had to do. The fire alone would be a mountain of the stuff, let alone all the little incidents from yesterday, including Maggie Ann’s place. Some of it he would simply need to review, since other officers would have written it up. Others he would need to add to as the highest-ranking officer. He’d been the only one available to handle the hunter fistfight, so that one was all his.

He hoped his guys had made it in before him, so he wouldn’t be waiting on them to finish up their portion. He’d start with the idiot hunters and see where the others were after that.
